What are keloid/hypertrophic scars?

Keloid and hypertrophic scars result from an abnormal wound healing response in particular individuals, in response to common skin injuries such as surgery, ear piercing, lacerations, abrasions, tattooing, vaccinations, injections, insect bites, burns, acne, chicken pox, folliculitis/ingrown hairs, and shingles. Keloid/Hypertrophic scars are often raised, and pink/red in colour with a smooth, shiny surface.

How can keloid/hypertrophic scars be treated?

Treatment options for scars include non surgical methods such as steroid creams, intra-scar steroid injections, cryotherapy that may be used in combination with surgical removal or fractional CO2 lasers.
