What is vitiligo?

​

his is an unusual skin disease that is characterized by loss of pigment in certain areas resulting in patches of discoloured skin. It usually affects the skin but may affect the mouth, eyes and hair. 

The exact causes of vitiligo are unknown. People at risk are people who have an autoimmune disease, or have a history of vitiligo are at increased risk.

How can vitiligo be treated?

​

There is currently no cure for vitiligo. A person who has vitiligo will live with the condition for the remainder of their life. However, changes in pigmentation may be reversed or corrected with treatment options such as cosmetics, topical or oral medications that control inflammation / suppress the immune system and ultraviolet light therapy.
